Bernie Parent Highlights Hockey Night in Selkirk

The man who backstopped the Philadelphia Flyers to a pair of Stanley Cup championships in the mid 1970s is going to behind the microphone at this year’s Hockey Night in Selkirk.

The Selkirk Steelers are proud to have hall of fame goaltender Bernie Parent as its speaker for the hockey club’s annual dinner on Febuary 4, 2010 at the banquet hall inside the Selkirk Rec. Centre.

“This is the marquee event for the Selkirk Steelers each season,” said Steelers General Manager Ken Petrash. “Every season our players, sponsors and fans look forward to hearing from someone that has had a great impact on the game of hockey and this year will be no different with Bernie Parent.”

Parent was in goal for the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975 when the Flyers won back-to-back Stanley Cups. He was also named Conn Smythe Trophy and Vezina Trophy winner in each of those seasons. Parent was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984.

Tickets for Hockey Night in Selkirk are $150 each or a table of eight is $1000. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Steelers office at 204-482-7020 or emailing info@selkirksteelers.com.

About Bernie Parent
Originally a Boston Bruin, Bernie Parent moved to the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1967 Expansion Draft. He helped the young team grow as their net minder but his stay lasted for only a couple of seasons: he moved to Toronto in 1971. This did a world of good for Parent’s game, as the Leafs’ goaltending coach was his boyhood hero, Jacques Plante. However, he left the team to join the WHA for a couple of seasons. After this proved unsuccessful, he returned to the NHL and the Leafs traded him back to the Flyers where he became a legend. Winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975, Parent won the Vezina and Conn Smythe trophies both years. Although an eye injury cut his career short, Parent cemented his place in hockey history.
