STEELERS CAPTAIN COMMITS TO NIPISSING

The Steelers announce that 20-year-old defenseman Brendan Mitchell has accepted a scholarship to Nipissing University of the CIS beginning this upcoming 2013-2014 season.

Mitchell, who originates from Stonewall, Mb, spent one season of his junior hockey career with the Selkirk Steelers. Appearing in all 60 games last season Mitchell had 3 goals, 10 assists and 52 penalty minutes.

Mitchell was also the Manitoba Junior Hockey Leagues recipient of the inaugural IBAM (Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba) scholarship. The IBAM award provides $2,000 towards post-secondary education.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to move onto the next level and play CIS hockey. The opportunity to combine elite hockey with education is exciting. I can’t say enough about the continuing support I got from my family, teammates, coaches, and the Selkirk Steelers.” Says Brendan Mitchell

“On behalf of the Selkirk Steelers Hockey Club I would like to congratulate Brendan Mitchell on accepting a scholarship to play at Nipissing University. We are extremely proud of Brendan for this accomplishment as it is well deserved. It was a pleasure to have coached Brendan the last year and I am looking forward to seeing how he progresses in his university career. I wish him the best of luck.” says Ryan Smith, Steelers Head Coach.
